Clean oil leaves through the central threaded hole in the base plate, while dirty oil enters through the holes around it. A rubber gasket seals the filter against the compressor housing.
The paper element sits on a centre tube. The anti-drain valve keeps oil from draining out at shutdown, and the bypass valve routes oil around a clogged element.
Dirty oil enters through the outer holes, flows down around the element, passes through the paper and returns via the centre tube and threaded hole to the airend.
