Pleated media in a frame
Synthetic filter media is pleated inside a galvanised steel or cardboard frame: the pleats multiply the surface area several times while the pressure drop stays low.

Four parts
A support mesh holds the pleats from the downstream side, so they do not deflect under airflow pressure. A seal around the frame perimeter prevents air from bypassing the filter.
Dust is held on the surface
Air enters at the front: coarse particles stay on the pleat surface and the cleaned air leaves at the back for the next stage. As the media loads, the pressure differential rises — and that is what sets the replacement time.
